REFLECTIONS

Writing is similar to a building; it has a foundation to support the entire edifice, similar to an outline that supports the format of a piece of writing. Blue prints and designs are composed in order to know what should be built, such as research needs to be conducted to understand what should be written. A foundation is established to provide support to the building like an outline is made to provide organization and structure. Walls and doors are incorporated in order to lead into different compartments; similarly transitions are constructed by an author to lead into new ideas. Surfaces are painted in order to provide a variance in scenery, such as annotations and citations are included in writing to provide variance and supplementation in views. Finally, a building has an address that signifies it position and purpose, such as each paper has a certain writing style that fulfills the requirements of a particular field. Without all these components, a building will be weak and fumble in accordance to a piece of paper that will be incomplete. English 3010 allowed me to build up these components along with so many other components gradually through the completion of all the assigned writing projects.

With the fruition of all the assignments during the course and through the constant help and teachings of Jule, I was able in excelling my writing in the field of biology. This course helped me ameliorate the basics such as perfecting the writing style, grammar, and recognizing common writing errors. Once these basics were perfected, I was able to focus on the improvement of my research skills, identify reliable and qualified sources, and use these skills to make deductions in the field of biology. Overall, this course was beneficial in helping me grow as a writer in my field, but it just simply helped me mature and progress as writer in general. I would recommend this course for any college student that wants to improve their writing.

As William Faulkner once said, “The work never matches the dream of perfection the artist has to start with.”  When given a writing assignment, several thoughts about how I want to write the paper come to mind.  Yet when I write the paper, it turns out different from what I had imagined.  Many times I have trouble organizing my thoughts into a logical order, and other times I end up making many technical errors.  However, after taking Intermediate Composition with Jule Wallis, I have been able to improve upon these mistakes and have matured as a writer.  Over the course of this class, each essay I have written has taught me a new aspect of writing, especially in the field of biology.  From essay one, which required me to analyze my writing mistakes, to essays two, three and four, which taught me how to write in the field of science, English 3010 has forever changed my experience as a writer.
As I come closer to completing my undergraduate studies, I will be required to write many important papers in the field of biology.  Thanks to Jule Wallis and her guidance throughout this course, I feel much more confident that I will succeed in writing these research proposals.  Not only do I know where to conduct my research, but I also know how to follow the APA guidelines when writing a paper.  These two factors will be especially important when I begin to write my thesis paper in the following year.  Because of English 3010, I have also been able to grow as a writer.  This course helped me to learn where my weaknesses are in writing, and how I need to fix them.  I will still face the challenge of organizing my papers in a logical manner, but I feel I have come a long way from the first day of class.  Thanks to Jule Wallis, I no longer fear writing essays no matter how many challenges I may face along the way!

As Steve Martin once said “I think I did pretty well, considering I started out with nothing but a bunch of blank paper”.  After taking English 3010 with Professor Jule Wallis, I feel I did pretty well considering it was my first time writing in the field of Biology.  At first I was nervous about taking this class since English has never been my strong point.  After looking at the syllabus for English 3010 I became even more overwhelmed.  The projects seemed complex and very challenging which of course is to be expected in an intermediate writing class.  However, many resources were available which made the experience in this class less frightening.  Even through all the struggles I faced in writing, I am glad I took this class with Professor Wallis.  After completing the assigned projects, I have gained a great deal of experience in drafting essays and have become a better writer.
Through the writing assignments that were assigned in this class I was able to experience how one would write in the field of biology.  This course also allowed me to identify weaknesses in my writing, conduct research efficiently and analyze sources, and gain a general understanding of the writing style in my field.  I would definitely recommend this course for anyone who wants to improve their writing skills or anyone who wants to learn how to write in their field of study.  I’m glad I decided to take this class with Professor Wallis.  She was very understanding and helped students tremendously.  With her feedback I feel I will be able to improve my writing skills to become a better writer in the future.

This class was extremely valuable and beneficial for me in many ways. Project One helped me learn more about myself as a writer and analyze my own writing skills and methods. Project Two introduced me to journal reviews and I became aware of top Political Science journals that I used for the rest of the projects in this class, and will continue to use for many other future classes in my discipline. Project Three introduced me to literature reviews, and I learned a great deal of information on racial and cultural profiling in America. Project Four introduced me to research proposals. I became aware of how to set up research proposals into different sections and invent experiments. Along with all these new assignments, I overcame many of my fears in writing, such as paper length and referencing. I finally was able to learn and remember the format of APA referencing and in-text citing. I also became aware of annotating different sources including books, magazines, journals, and websites. Overall, this class was extremely interesting, educating, and entertaining. I would recommend this class to all students because it not only teaches you skills in English, but skills in your own field of study.

Personally, I really enjoyed taking this course. No matter what field a person may decide to go into, it is essential that one knows how to write an adequate essay. Whether one decides to become or journalist or a doctor, it is vital for one to take an English course to develop fundamental writing skills. By taking English 3010 with Jule Wallis, I have significantly improved my writing techniques. In addition to this, I have become more organized and have been able to create my own process that makes my writing more effective and not so overwhelming. This course has taught me to write research essays in APA format, which will be very helpful later on in my career with future papers. I also learned the different ways to conduct research, how to reference my essays properly, and how to produce annotations.

Many different courses are required for biology major. Within the study of biology research, papers and biological journals must be written in a specific way. The information that must be presented to readers should be very understandable and easy to follow. One course that I thought would help me perform better in my biology major was English 3010. I believe it will help me in the future with research projects and writing papers on topics in biology. Throughout the course, different projects helped introduce numerous concepts and writing tools that I did not know previously, which will help me in my future papers. Topics addressed in the course that benefited me the greatest was what defined me as a writer, how to conduct research, referencing, and the process of annotations.
