WRITING PROCESS

Everyone has a unique writing process.  Some are more effective than others.  It is important to have a writing process because it helps one develop an organized and effective essay.  Usually, the process begins with a question, prompt, or topic.  With that, one can brainstorm or write out ideas that they may have for the essay.  Then, one can begin to do research to find helpful information.  Figuring out how one will organize their essay is next.  Creating a detailed outline builds the backbone of ones essay.  I usually cannot write an essay in one sitting.  I have to think of how I am going to construct my essay, find credible resources, produce an outline, and then write my essay.  I proofread and edit my writing  after I have finished and fix any errors I may find.

Writing an essay can be a daunting task.  However, if certain steps are followed, the writing process may become less challenging for many individuals.  Before beginning the writing process, choose a topic of research that you are interested in, and decide what general research question you want to ask.  Once you have chosen a general topic for research, create a timeline of when you want everything accomplished.  The next step is to conduct the research relevant to your topic.  The best palace to do research is by using the Wayne State University’s library catalogue.  The article database has many subject areas one can choose from, depending on their area of research.  The internet is another source one can use in order to obtain information for their research topic.  Take notes on the research that you find interesting.  Read through the information, and organize the material into subtopics.  Once you have done as much research as possible, narrow down your research topic by choosing one of the subtopics and doing additional research in this specific area.  As you are working, keep a bibliography list and add each source as you use the information.  After all your research has been collected, begin writing an outline of your research proposal.  An outline will make it easier to incorporate all the research you have collected into the essay.  As a result, your essay will be highly organized and easy to read.

The writing process is a complex task necessary to begin writing a paper.  It can be very time consuming as many steps are involved in this process.  For me, the first step is to find a quiet environment.  Once this is accomplished I begin by brainstorming ideas or questions that can be researched.  The next step is to conduct the research necessary to get an understanding of the topic.  This is done by searching the topic on Google or finding articles through databases or journals.  After all the information is gathered, I usually organize all my articles or sources.  This can take a while since I have to read and understand the articles.  Once I know this information, I begin by writing an outline of my paper to highlight main points I wish to discuss.  In the outline I also include my thesis statement.  The next step is to write the paper.  I do this by discussing what I learned through my research and citing elements from different sources.  After I finish writing I always proofread my essay to fix any errors in my writing.  If time permits, I also like to have others check my paper before submitting it

The writing process consists of all the steps a writer takes when composing a piece of writing. These steps vary among writers, but yet some steps are universally beneficial to all. The first step is finding a suitable environment that allows you to focus on your writing. Then, brainstorm ideas of what you want to include in your work. This can vary from making maps or writing bullet points. Once brainstorming is completed, those ideas need to be researched in order to determine your main points and what you want to include in your paper. Once this has been done, an outline should be constructed that organizes your ideas and provides a preliminary format for your writing. Having your information systematically formatted, now you begin writing. This step is followed by revision and editing to correct errors. Such common mistakes are grammar errors, cohesion, and organization mistakes. Once revision is completed, your work should be peer edited because mistakes that might be over looked by you might not be overlooked by others. Then, your paper is complete.

In the first project as a class, we described our writing techniques and the methods we used to write a previous paper. My methods for writing consisted of analyzing the question or topic given and understanding what I already knew about the subject. I would go through and organize an outline that would consist of an introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion and references. From there I formulated my paragraphs and combined them to create my paper. Some of the problems I believe I had done throughout my writing process was not taking enough time to go through and have a classmate proofread my work. I think many of my problems originated from this because I never took the initiative to read my paper aloud or spend time with a friend, and go through my paper very thoroughly. Small errors such as having paragraphs flow from one to another or transitioning, and staying on the topic throughout the paper could have been avoided. That is why by the end of project one I had a better approach to formulating a paper, and having a process to help edit my work.

Every individual has his or her own writing style. Since were were younger, our teachers have been trying to shove a certain process down our throats:
  • Brainstorm
  • Outline
  • Rough Draft
  • Peer-Edit
  • Final Copy
To many writers, including myself, this has not been the most comfortable and effective way to go about writing a paper. I myself have my own process:
  • Brainstorm
  • Final Copy
Brainstorming for me is set up in its own process:
  • Decide on a topic
  • Decide on what I want in my body paragraphs
  • Decide how many body paragraphs
  • Begin Writing
I have always set up all my papers, regardless on the type of paper and the length:
  • Attractive Introduction
  • Thesis
  • Body Paragraphs (Number depends on required length)
  • Counterargument
  • Conclusion
Every person has his or her own habits and rituals that make them comfortable while they write. Some people enjoy loud atmospheres, while others enjoy quieter atmospheres. Some work better under pressure, while others like getting their work done early. My certain habits and rituals when writing are:
  • Quiet Atmosphere
  • Work Alone, No Group Studies
  • Night Time
  • Bright Room
  • Get Work Done Early, No Pressure
Everybody should become aware of the methods and processes that make them the most comfortable and practice them to get the most effective writing accomplished.
